The locals are passionate bicyclists! By tradition, the bicycle is the most popular means of transportation in Kos. The numerous visitors of the island follow this tradition enthusiastically, as it is a perfect way to explore the island and keep fit at the same time!
Kos has many interesting places to visit. To begin with, it is the birth-place of Hippocrates, the father of Medicine. In the town of Kos you can see the famous plane-tree of Ippokrates ("Platanos"). You can visit the Archaeological Museum, the Ancient Agora, the Ancient Odeon, the Greek and Roman Baths, the Temple of Dionysos, Casa Romana and the impressive Roman Castle of the Knights that overlooks the harbor of the island.
Just four kilometers off Kos town is Asklepieion, a place of unparallel natural beauty and great historical significance. Asklepieion used to be the greatest health institution in Ancient Greece, dedicated to Asklepios, the god of medicine. It was at this beautiful place that Hippokrates treated his patients. The view of the Aegean Sea from Asklepieion is truly breath-taking.
Other places worth-visiting are the traditional village Zia on Dikaios mountain, the picturesque village Kefalos where you can eat fresh fish, Thermes, which is famous for the thermal springs and the beautiful forest of Plaka where you can take a walk or have a picnic while enjoying the company of beautiful peacocks and other rare species of birds.
By boat you can visit the volcanic island of Nissyros and Kalymnos, the island of sponge divers. There are daily mini-cruises to other nearby islands with traditional type wooden boats that sail you to beautiful, unspoiled beaches. |
